FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: News Media Contact: December 6, 2000 Mark Rubin at (202) 418-2924 e-mail: mrubin@fcc.gov 800 MHZ SPECIALIZED MOBILE RADIO SERVICES (Lower 80 Channels) AUCTION RAISES $28,978,385.00 Washington, D.C. - The Federal Communications Commission's 800 MHz Specialized Mobile Radio Service (SMR) (Lower 80 Channels) auction ended on Tuesday, December 5, 2000, raising a total net revenue of $28,978,385.00. The winners may provide analog or digital services used for voice communications, paging, data and facsimile services. The auction, which began on November 1, ended after 151 rounds of bidding. Of the 22 winning bidders 19 claimed small business status. 2,800 licenses were sold in the auction. The largest number of licenses auctioned, by the FCC at any one time. Sixteen non-contiguous 5 channel blocks (0.25 MHz bandwidth) were auctioned in 172 Economic Areas (EAs) and 3 EA "like" areas. The 3 EA "like" areas consist of the United States territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. License winners must make down payments on licenses 10 business days after the release of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau's Public Notice announcing the close of the auction. Winning bidders must also file their long form applications with the FCC within the same period.
