Users can control which of the four available layers appear on the map by clicking on the Layers button ( ) and then clicking on the eye icon ( ) to toggle each layer’s visibility.
The map was created using mobile data from the Broadband Data Collection, as of December 31, 2022 (updated 8/16/2023), for two technology/speed combinations (4G, with 5 Mbps downstream/1 Mbps upstream, or better; or 5G at 7/1 Mbps), and for two environments (in-vehicle mobile, or outdoor stationary). Areas are shown for each combination of technology/speed and environment if they lack the relevant service from an unsubsidized provider (i.e., footprints for providers receiving subsidies were not included in determining the areas). Areas shown on the map are resolution-9 H3 hexagons (hex-9s) that lack the applicable service, as determined by whether the centroid of H3 hexagon intersects the relevant coverage-data polygons. Hex-9s completely covered by water and/or urban areas have been removed as well as any resulting polygon less than 1 square kilometer.
