On October 31, 2016, the FCC’s Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau (Bureau) released a Public Notice requesting comment on a petition filed by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). ESA asks the FCC to extend a waiver from the FCC’s rules requiring the advanced communication services (ACS) features in video game software to be accessible to people with disabilities.
Previously, in 2012, the Bureau granted a waiver of the FCC’s ACS accessibility requirements for three classes of game-related equipment, including video game software, until October 8, 2015. In September 2015, the Bureau extended the waiver for video game software until January 1, 2017.
On October 19, 2016, ESA filed a petition requesting an extension of the waiver for video game software for an additional 12 months – until January 1, 2018. The deadlines for filing comments in response to the 2016 ESA petition are as follows:
