Workshop: Deployment Wireless - General

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT
Washington, DC
The goal of this workshop is to explore the extent to which wireless broadband as currently deployed or expected to be deployed, is, or can become, a substitute for fixed broadband. The workshop will in particular explore the sufficiency of current and anticipated wireless broadband networks to support current and future broadband applications and services. Moreover, to the extent that current wireless broadband infrastructures do not fully support the broad range of applications and services that run on fixed broadband networks today and expected in the future, the workshop will explore what steps will need to be taken to address any shortcomings. In addition, the workshop will explore the value of mobility to end users and the extent to which mobility justifies any variation in cost or performance as compared to a fixed wireless or wireline infrastructure.

Topics

The following are some of the preliminary topics that will be covered at this workshop. If you would like to discuss any other topics, please send us your suggestions.
  • Are mobile broadband networks and services a complement or a substitute to fixed wireless and wireline broadband networks and services?
  • How do you view the sufficiency of the current and future state of wireless broadband networks to support current and future applications and services?
  • If the mobile broadband network infrastructure does not fully support a broad range of applications and services that run on existing or future fixed broadband networks —what can be done to address these shortcomings?
  • What is the value of mobility of broadband services to the end user?
  • How does the cost of a mobile wireless broadband network deployment compare to a fixed wireless or wireline broadband network deployment?
  • How does the performance of a mobile wireless broadband network compare to a fixed wireless or wireline broadband network?
  • What can the government do to facilitate: (i) providing wireless broadband service to additional customers; (ii) extending the current footprints of mobile wireless broadband networks; or (iii) improving network capacity and quality of service?
