Workshop: Global Broadband Connects America and the World: Infrastructure, Services and Applications

This workshop will focus on how broadband (in the United States and elsewhere) and universal connectivity can bring the benefits of a global, mobile, digital world to people and entities everywhere. (By contrast, the August 18, 2009 “International Lessons Workshop” focused primarily on broadband in other countries.) The purposes of the December 10 “Global Broadband” Workshop are to:

• Show how global broadband and universal connectivity enable people and entities in the United States to communicate globally and to send and receive information worldwide; and conversely, how broadband enables people and entities abroad to do likewise; and
• Encourage wider deployment of broadband in the U.S. and globally by showcasing its consumer benefits and applications in areas such as telemedicine, defense, distance learning, disaster recovery and personal communications

Topics

• What broadband networks exist (satellite, undersea cable, etc.) to support and benefit U.S. consumers in the global marketplace?
• Where are these networks and what are their architectures?
• What expansion of these networks in envisioned and what are the challenges to maintenance or growth and expansion of these networks domestically and in international jurisdictions?

• What applications/services are being provided over these global networks?
• How do these applications/services benefit U.S. consumers and the economy, society, etc.?
• What role do the commercial broadband services and applications available in the U.S. play with regard to users globally?
• What role do the commercial broadband services and applications available in other countries play with regard to users in the United States?
• What are the existing gaps in connectivity now that need to be filled and what are the expected needs and applications going forward?
