GTE Midwest, Inc. did not exist as an operating company. 1993
GTE Midwest, Inc. became a new operating company under the GTE holding company. Study area jurisdictions GTIA, GTMN, GTMO, and GTNE were moved from the control of GTE North, Inc. to this new GTE operating company. Contel of Missouri d/b/a GTE Missouri merged under GTE Midwest, Inc. GTE Midwest, Inc. also acquired Contel's study area jurisdictions Iowa, Systems Iowa, System Missouri and Eastern Missouri. All the transactions took place on 4/1/93.

On 6/30/2000, Bell Atlantic (BNTR) and GTE Corporation (GTTC) merged into one company, Verizon Communications. GTE Midwest, Inc. was renamed as GTE Midwest, Incorporated dba Verizon Midwest. In addition, Verizon Communications sold several of the study areas under this company. On 6/30/2000, all the Iowa study areas (GTIA, COIA, & COSI) were sold to Iowa Network Service, and the Nebraska study area (GTNE) was sold to Citizens Communications – CTC of Nebraska.
