Back to School Webinar
The FCC's Consumer Affairs and Outreach Division hosted a "Back to School" webinar on Sept. 12, 2024, with presentations from the FCC, the U.S. Dept. of Education, and the Schools Health and Libraries Broadband Coalition.
The FCC's presentation focused on the following topics:
- Broadband Consumer Labels, which internet service providers must display at points of sale - both in store and online - for their internet plans. The labels are designed to help consumers compare internet plans based on information that ISPs must provide;
- The Lifeline program for affordable communications, which provides monthly discounts for telephone and internet services to eligible households;
- The Schools and Libraries (E-Rate) program, which has been providing discounts to assist schools and libraries obtain affordable telecommunications and internet access. E-Rate funds can now be used by schools and libraries to pay for Wi-Fi hot spots, along with Wi-Fi services on school buses that meet certain qualifying criteria;
- Information about the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline, a nationwide network of more than 200 crisis centers that provide 24/7 confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress;
- Tips for stopping or reducing unwanted calls and texts; and
- Tips for protecting children from objectionable content.
The Department of Education presentation focused on Digital Divides. The Schools Health and Libraries Broadband Coalition highlighted E-Rate Opportunities for Schools and Libraries.
