The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will promote innovation in accessibility with several activities at the upcoming 2017 M-Enabling Summit. The Summit will take place at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel on June 12-13-14 in Arlington, VA.
The Chairman's Awards for Advancement in Accessibility (Chairman's AAA) will recognize innovators for improving the experience of people with disabilities in telecommunications and technology. The official ceremony will take place on Tuesday June 13 from 4:45 pm until 5:45 pm. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with awardees and learn about their new products or services.
Ajit Pai, the newly appointed Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, will be delivering the keynote address celebrating the awardees and their role in furthering accessibility innovation.
Karen Peltz Strauss, Deputy Chief of the FCC Consumer Affairs Bureau will chair a session dedicated to the progress made in promoting real-time text (RTT). By enabling real-time conversations, RTT brings a whole new dimension to mobile communications for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities, including for social, educational, business and emergency situations. Suzy Rosen Singleton, Chief of the Disability Rights Office of the FCC will participate in this same panel, which will examine how RTT may evolve as a global standard allowing seamless interoperability among communications networks around the world.
The session on innovation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons will feature a presentation by Robert McConnell, Disability Rights Office, FCC on the Direct Video Calling Initiative, including a description of available technology and a review of the benefits that it brings to organizations and to the Deaf community.
Other key sessions and topics that will be explored at this year’s M-Enabling Summit include the latest on web accessibility, social media and collaborative platforms, wearables, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, as well as communications accessibility in higher education, businesses, government, workplaces, and smart cities.
