On August 6, 2019, the Commission released a Report and Order and Second Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to better identify gaps in broadband coverage across the nation.
The Report and Order establishes a new broadband deployment data collection that requires providers to submit geospatial maps of their fixed broadband coverage areas and improve the existing Form 477 data collection. The Second Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeks comment on, among other things, ways to develop location-specific data to precisely identify the homes and small businesses that have and do not have access to broadband services. It also seeks comment on what additional steps the Commission should take to obtain more accurate and reliable mobile broadband deployment data.
