    Space Bureau–Office of the Bureau Chief
    The Office of the Bureau Chief seeks interns with a background in engineering to assist with projects to further its mission in promoting a competitive and innovative space-based telecommunications marketplace.

  • General Duties
    Technical research on topics of satellite communications systems; analysis of technical aspects of earth station and space station license applications, including modeling and simulation; and review of comments filed by the public in rulemaking proceedings.
  • Selection Criteria
    • Engineering/computer science undergraduate and graduate students may apply for this internship position. The ideal candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills, and an interest in communications technologies and policy. Students must be enrolled at least half-time to be considered.
    • Candidates must be U.S. citizens. Candidates with dual citizenship may be hired on case-by-case basis.

    Space Bureau–Satellite Programs and Policy Division and Earth Station Licensing Division
    The primary mission of the Satellite Programs and Policy Division is to serve U.S. consumers by promoting a competitive and innovative domestic and global telecommunications marketplace. The Division strives to achieve this goal by: (1) authorizing as many satellite systems as possible and as quickly as possible to facilitate deployment of satellite services; (2) minimizing regulation and maximizing flexibility for satellite telecommunications providers to meet customer needs; and (3) fostering efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum and orbital resources. The Division also provides expertise about the commercial satellite industry in the domestic spectrum management process and advocates U.S. satellite radiocommunication interests in international coordinations and negotiations.
    The Earth Station Licensing Division is responsible for the technical analysis, review, and licensing of applications and special temporary requests for satellite earth stations. The division works closely with other divisions to develop and administer rules, regulations, and policies to support a competitive and innovative space-based global telecommunications marketplace.

    Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters.
  • General Duties
    Legal research on topics of communications and administrative law, review of comments filed by public in rulemaking proceedings and drafting of initial Commission decisions. Legal interns will work in either the Satellite Programs and Policy Division or the Earth Station Licensing Division, though projects in the other Division may be possible.
  • Selection Criteria
    • Applicants with strong interest in space or satellite law are preferred, but no prior communications or technical experience is necessary. Candidates must be current full- or half-time students at an accredited law school.
    • Candidates must be U.S. citizens. Candidates with dual citizenship may be hired on a case-by-case basis.

    Technical research on topics of satellite communications systems; evaluates earth station license applications for technical accuracy, completeness of content, overall consistency, and review of comments filed by the public.
