On 6/30/2000, Bell Atlantic Corporation (BNTR) and GTE Corporation (GTTC) merged into one company, Verizon Communications. However, Verizon Communications kept the two separate holding companies intact; Bell Atlantic and GTE Corporation. During this period, Verizon Communications sold a number of study areas and exchanges from the GTE operating companies.
