Speed tests run on the FCC Mobile Speed Test app, or on approved third party apps, can be shared with the FCC to help evaluate mobile coverage across the United States and to verify the accuracy of the National Broadband Map. The Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) reviews and approves third-party mobile speed test apps for use in the FCC's Broadband Data Collection Program.

Approved mobile applications allow consumers to submit crowdsourced data and challenge mobile coverage data for more detailed and precise information on mobile broadband service availability. The submitted data may help improve the accuracy of FCC's broadband maps. Specifically, for the mobile coverage challenge process, speed test apps can challenge the service providers' outdoor stationary and in-vehicle mobile maps based on the technology specific minimum download/upload speed thresholds: 35/3 and 7/1 Mbps for 5G, 5/1 Mbps for 4G, and 0.2/0.05 Mbps for 3G networks.

As required by the BDC Mobile Technical Requirements Order, this webpage maintains a list of BDC approved third-party apps and any available data specifications for third-party apps.

The FCC reviews the privacy policies for pending and approved apps for completeness against its requirements, and does not independently validate the claims. The FCC is not responsible for the performance or security of third party speed test applications.
